Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 - Tenuta di Carleone

Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 - Tenuta di Carleone

Tenuta di Carleone's Chianti Classico is a wine obtained from 100% Sangiovese grapes grown in the Chianti Classico area. Fermentation takes place in steel and cement and, as per the winery's style, a long maceration takes place (40-60 days) followed by aging for 18 months.

Tenuta di Carleone is a winery located in the heart of Chianti Classico, near Radda in Chianti, between Siena and Florence. Founded in 2012 by Austrian entrepreneur Karl Egger and his family, the estate takes its name from the village of Castiglioni. Production is organic and biodynamic and focuses on the Sangiovese grape.

Egger's meeting with winemaker Sean O'Callaghan was instrumental in the development of the winery and while Egger handles the business and promotional side of the estate, Sean O'Callaghan, aka "Il Guercio", has full control of the winery.

Sean's winemaking is free from interventionism and favors spontaneous fermentations and long, sometimes very long, macerations of up to 120 days depending on the label.

The core of the production is Sangiovese, and Sean is always looking for new vineyards to compose the perfect mosaic within the region and the denomination. The vineyards of international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Franc are instead used to produce "Il Randagio", a wine that embodies Sean's unconventional style, which ages in concrete tanks and relies on long macerations and whole-bunch fermentation.

Sean O'Callaghan, known as "Il Guercio", is an Irish winemaker who has left and is leaving a significant mark on the world of Tuscan wine. Sean, through careful management of winemaking, manages to compose a mosaic that gives Sangiovese an almost Burgundian identity, with elegant aromas and a crisp and fluid sip. Just a tasting of the labels produced, not only of Chianti Classico, but also of "Guercio" and "Uno", the winery's flagship label, is enough to get a clear idea of how Sean's approach is revolutionary and suited to the Radda in Chianti area and Sangiovese.
