We are very close to the last part of the Gironde, just before the river flows into the ocean. The area is therefore conditioned by a very pronounced maritime climate. This aspect together with the composition of the soils, also here mainly characterized by gravel mixed with quartz and sand, generate austere wines, often with a truly 'important' tannic baggage.
The wines of Saint-Estèphe, characterized by a prevalence of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, can age for much longer periods than the already very high average of Bordeaux wines. The total hectares of this area are 1250. In Saint-Estèphe there are two Châteaux that are classified according to the famous 'hit parade' of 1855 as second cru. These are Château Montrose and Cos d'Estorunel. Both of these two companies have a vineyard extension of about 100 hectares, against an average of the area of just over 15.
